Default Bund walls

Hi all,

Please can anybody tell me if bund wall standards are legislated - if so, which Act is it or is it a SANS standard? Where is it stated in writing that a bund wall should be able to contain 110% of the contents of the tank/container in the event of a leak or burst.

I had Twitted about this a couple of months ago and luckily still have a good memory.

I hope this helps. David Poole

Hi Sharon,

If your operating is within the SA boundaries, we suggest that you contact the local fire brigade as each local authority will prescribe the requirements of bund walls to be used.

Hopes this helps you.

Default Bund walls.

Hi Sharon,
Rather late than never.
SANS 10089-1:2008 deals with the bunding requirements of petroleum porducts. In a nutshell the requirements are 100% of the largest container (tank) and 10% of eacg of the balance of containers if more than 1.
I understand your question as I have had this fight countless times with auditors whom always demand 110%. Local authorities may amend this standard to a contain a higher percentage but not a lower standard.
It must always be remembered that if legislation does not specify then SANS standards are those that apply.
Regards,
